Acer Aspire Laptop Range

Core 2 Duo T5500 Processor 1.66GHz, 1GB RAM

Whenever someone asks us if you can really get a decent thin-and-light laptop for about S$1,500 (US$986.03), offer up the Acer Aspire 4710 as evidence. Here you've a thin-and-light laptop with an attractive 14.1-inch display, a solid keyboard, and all the ports and connections a home user could need, for just S$1,448 (US$952.63). The catch, if you consider it one, is that inside the case you'll find a dual-core Pentium processor which, though it has multiple processing cores, isn't enough to keep up with Core Duo and Core 2 Duo systems. No one expects a cheap laptop to win any speed contests, though. Fortunately, some countries offer configurations equipped with a speedy Core 2 Duo processor. Many home users just want a machine for checking email, typing documents, and watching DVDs. So for those users, we recommend the Acer Aspire 4710.

Design of the Acer Aspire 4710 Laptop PC

Like its larger and more-expensive sibling, the Aspire 5920, the Aspire 4710 features Acer's new Gemstone design which includes a matte-black lid and a light-gray interior. The case's rounded corners and beveled edges give the laptop a soft look that, in this smaller form, reminds us of the original clamshell Mac iBooks. Despite its soft looks, the Aspire 4710 feels pretty solid, though the screen did wobble a bit on its hinges when we accidentally bumped our desk.

The Aspire 4710's display is great for watching movies and working with images, thanks to its sharp 1,280 x 800 native resolution. Though not a deal-breaker, it's worth noting that colors tended to look particularly washed out at the highest brightness level. Also, the screen's glossy finish is among the more reflective ones that we've seen lately; the reflections were manageable in a typical office environment but intolerable when we were seated with our backs to an outside window. While higher-end configurations of the Aspire 4710 include a Webcam in the display bezel, the baseline configuration we reviewed does not.

We enjoyed typing on the Acer Aspire 4710's sturdy full-size keyboard. The keys provided plenty of travel and were remarkably quiet. Our palms did frequently graze the laptop's touchpad while typing, but the sensitivity of the pad was such that doing so did not misplace the cursor. Between the two standard mouse buttons sits a four-way scroll key that's particularly handy for reading Web pages and scrolling through long documents. A vertical row of controls on the left side of the keyboard include a convenient Wi-Fi on/off button as well as two programmable application launch buttons that default to the Web browser and email. The last button in the row is designed to turn the Bluetooth radio on and off; pressing it on this our review configuration only calls up a message declaring "No Bluetooth device". However, some retail configurations will include a Bluetooth radio as standard.

Given the Aspire 4710's movie-friendly display we wish Acer had found room on the keyboard deck for media controls; volume is controlled by a wheel on the laptop's front edge. Above the keyboard, next to the Dolby surround speakers, sits the triangular Empower key which launches a suite of utilities for managing battery life, network and sound settings. We loved having quick access to this information and enjoyed the design of the Empower suite, which looks very much like the Dashboard in Mac OS X.

Features of the Acer Aspire 4710 Laptop PC

We expected the Aspire 4710's low price to come from small economies on its features, but Acer has packed the laptop with all the ports and connections you'd expect on a thin-and-light laptop, including an ExpressCard/54 slot that should make it easy to add 3G/HSDPA card or a TV tuner. There are also two USB ports on each side of the laptop's base, which makes it easier to plug in lots of peripherals without getting cords tangled. The sound on the built-in Dolby digital speakers was decent, if a little tinny at high volumes; fortunately the S/PDIF audio-out jack lets you connect the Aspire 4710 to external stereo speakers for better sound quality. We like that Acer provides a software tool to quickly choose among multiple sound settings (music, movies, and games) so you get the best sound possible.

Performance And Battery Life of the Acer Aspire 4710 Laptop PC

With all these great features, our review unit of the Aspire 4710 achieves its remarkably low price in part by incorporating a budget dual-core Pentium processor (built on the Pentium architecture rather than the Core architecture that's been the standard for more than 18 months) and a single gigabyte of slow 533MHz RAM. It was no surprise, then, that the laptop displayed pokey performance on benchmark tests, falling in line with another Pentium dual-core system, the Toshiba Satellite P205 retailing in the US. What surprised us was that the Aspire 4710's performance came close to matching that of the some Core 2 Duo processor and well beyond the single-core Celeron processor found on some budget system. That's not to say that the Aspire 4710 will set any speed records; in fact, it will feel sluggish to anyone accustomed to Core 2 Duo-based systems. But for the money, it's definitely speedy enough for the productivity programs, media playback, and Web surfing that constitute most home computer use.

The Aspire 4710's battery held out for 1 hour 59 minutes on our taxing DVD drain test. While we always welcome lengthier battery life, we consider the 2-hour mark within the acceptable range for a thin-and-light laptop. Of course you can expect longer life from casual Web surfing and productivity work.

Acer’s Ferrari One Netbook

Just when we thought we’d heard everything we could ever want to hear about Netbooks and didn’t want to hear any more, along comes something new to catch our attention.

acer_ferrari_1.jpg

This time it is the upcoming launch of Acer’s Ferrari One Netbook, one of the first Netbooks to be based on AMD’s new platform. Yes, these low cost ultra portable devices just got damn interesting again.

Once you’ve got passed the F1 Ferrari branded design, which is super smart in a racy bright red colour with contrasting black and four neat little rubber tyres moulded to the bottom, you’ll soon find that under the bonnet things are looking just as good.

The new Ferrari One Netbook comes with an 11.6 inch display with a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels and a pretty impressive array of specs.

The Netbook features the low power Athlon X2 Dual Core L310 processor, 2GB DDR2 300 MHz RAM (upgradeable to 4G), 250 GB hard drive but even more is possible, and DirectX 10 capable ATI Radeon HD 3200 adaptor for graphics.

For connectivity you’ve got 802.11b/g draft-n Wi-Fi and the option of a surf-anywhere 3G module as well as of course Gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth.

No there isn’t an optical drive but there are heaps of slots and other features to enable you to do anything you want to do whether it is to conduct business, just for personal use or even gaming.

The Acer Ferrari One is supposedly going to be available to us mortals from October 22nd, which just happens to be the same day that Microsoft is releasing Windows 7.

The Ferrari will ship with either Windows 7 Home Premium OS or the Windows Starter Edition but Vista models are also available if that’s your particular poison.

Battery is a six cell which will supposedly give you around 5 hours of battery life but we won’t go into the battery life debate here. I would like to have seen a longer life away from a socket but what the heck.

It’s basically an upmarket Netbook with an upmarket price, starting at around 450 euros which equates to $656 United States Dollars or a whiff off of £400. These are starting prices though; it’ll cost you more if you want some of the extras.

If what I’ve seen so far is anything to go by it looks like I might just be persuaded to get my wallet out.

Apple MacBook

If you're looking for an Apple MacBook, then one of the models you should definitely look at is the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch, based on the new Intel Penryn processor.

This notebook has exhibits great performance and specifications. It also has tons of additional features which make it an excellent choice for mobile computing.

Read on and find out more about this latest offering from Apple.

1. Overview

The Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch laptop is a great looking machine. Encased in a standard good looking Apple chassis, it has a load of features beneath that pretty exterior. The machine also runs the latest 2.6-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 processor (also called Penryn). You also get the Mac OS X operating system installed and that opens up all the Mac based programs you need.

The Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch laptop

2. Design

Speaking of design, the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch comes with a weight of 5.3 pounds. I find it amazing that the designers managed to fit all that computing power in that light weight, less then an inch thick body. You'll definitely find that this Apple MacBook Pro is one of the sexier laptops out there.

3. Display

One of the nice features of the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch is the LED backlight. Yeah, this backlight is really cool coz it lights up the machine when the ambient surroundings gets too dark. If you crave large, gorgeous displays to play your movies and games, then the 1440 x 900 resolution of this machine, displayed on that 15.1 inch scren will definitely not disappoint.

3. Keyboard and Other Controls

Ok, what about the keyboard and other controls? The keyboard is really comfortable to type with, but that is not the most outstanding control of this machine.

The Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch has a solid feature called the gesture-based touchpad. This really cool feature allows you to pinch and navigate using your finger movements. This feature is also found in the iPhone and MacBook Air. So if you like cool, sexy navigation features, this MacBook is for you.

4. Ports and Connections

The Apple MacBook Pro boasts 802.11n wireless connectivity (which incidentally is the latest in wireless technology for laptops, the older ones being 802.11a and 802.11g). There are also ample USB ports for you to connect any external devices required.

5. Battery Life

The batter life of this MacBook Proc is pretty amazing, at about 3 hours 56 minutes. This is probably due to the Penryn process from Intel, which runs more efficiently than older types of processors.

6. Shortcomings

Right, what are the shortcomings of the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch? Well, to be frank with you - nothing much. Perhaps the only downside is the price tag. But in my opinion, the extra price is worth it for all the features you get, especially that gesture-based touchpad.

Conclusion

On the whole, the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch based on the Penryn processor provides top-of-the-line performance combined with a sleek, sexy design. If you are looking for a cool machine that has better computing power than the MacBook Air, then the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch might just be for you. So do check it out, and until next time - happy computing!

Apple MacBook Air

Core 2 Duo processor 1.6GHz, 2GB, 13.3-inch TFT

Apple's new laptop, the MacBook Air, may not be the true ultraportable that many had hoped for, but it still easily breaks new ground for small laptops. Mimicking the 13-inch silhouette of the current MacBook line, it's only 19.4mm thick at its thickest part, and Apple calls it the "world's thinnest notebook". Some nitpickers say an obscure Mitsubishi laptop from 1997 was a hair thinner, but two of the smallest current ultraportable laptops, the 11-inch Sony VAIO VGN-TZ16GN and the 12-inch Toshiba Portege R500, are both slightly thicker, and neither tapers to 4mm as the Air does along its front edge.

Design of the Apple MacBook Air

As we've come to expect from Apple, the design and engineering that went into the MacBook Air is extraordinary, but it's certainly a much more specialized product than the standard 13-inch MacBook and won't be as universally useful as that popular system. The biggest compromises, which have been well-documented, come in its connectivity: The MacBook Air finds room for only one USB port and doesn't include a built-in optical drive, FireWire, Ethernet, or mobile broadband. And, like with its other laptops, Apple refuses to outfit the Air with a media-card reader or an expansion card slot. Offsetting its sparse connectivity are genuinely useful new features including new touchpad gesture controls and the ability to wirelessly "borrow" another system's optical drive.

Choosing the Air over the cheaper, faster standard 13-inch MacBook, or the comparably priced MacBook Pro, will depend on your needs. Travelers who want minimum weight but maximum screen real estate, and who live their lives via Wi-Fi hotspots, with little need for wired connectivity, will find the S$2,988 (US$1,965.79) starting price a reasonable investment for owning one of the world's premier bits of high-tech eye candy. And while the MacBook Air's specs are inferior to those found on the cheaper MacBook, they compare more favorably when you look at other ultraportables where a price premium is always exacted. For instance, both the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ16GN and Toshiba Portege R500 cost hundreds more than the MacBook Air and feature slower CPUs and half the RAM as the Air.

Although it shares a desktop footprint with the standard black or white MacBooks, the first thing you notice about the Air is its aluminum chassis--similar to the one found on the MacBook Pro, and much more fingerprint resistant than the standard MacBooks. Picking it up, the MacBook Air feels a little heavier than you'd expect from looking at it, even though it's only 1.36kg. At the same time, it feels very sturdy and solid, thanks in part to the aluminum construction, and we'd have no qualms about carting it around with us all day. By way of comparison, the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ16GN features an 11.1-inch screen and weighs only 160g lighter than the Air, and the Portege R500 is 270g lighter than the Air with a 12.1-inch screen.

Features of the Apple MacBook Air

The MacBook Air includes an iSight camera and mic, and an LED backlit display that works with an ambient light sensor to adjust the screen brightness in response to the light in the room. The keyboard--the same full-size version found in other MacBooks--has backlit keys that are also controlled by the ambient light sensor, although we really had to adjust the room lighting a good deal to see any difference.

The revamped touchpad is large, measuring nearly 5 inches diagonally, and it works with new multitouch gestures. Other MacBooks let you do things like use two fingers to scroll through documents--this one lets you use three fingers to go forward and back in your Web browser history, and use your thumb and forefinger to zoom in and out of documents and photos--much like on the iPhone. The three-finger forward/back gesture was immediately useful, and we're already missing it when using another laptop. Apple tells us these new gestures won't be available on older MacBooks as a firmware upgrade, as the hardware behind the new touchpad is different.

Another noteworthy new feature is the remote disc function. Since the Air lacks an optical drive, you can instead remotely see the optical drives of other systems, PC or Mac, as long as they're on the same network. The setup was a little cumbersome for the "host" PC--requiring us to insert the OS X disc that came with the Air, run a small setup program, and then find and turn on "CD and DVD sharing" in the Windows control panel (the documentation could have been a little clearer on what you need to do to on the Windows side). Once we set it up, however, it worked like a charm. You won't be able to stream DVD movies or music CDs via remote disc, but it's fine for getting files and installing apps. A matching external USB DVD burner is available from Apple for S$158 (US$103.95), but any USB DVD drive should work.

The display offers the same 1,280 x 800 native resolution as the standard 13-inch MacBook, but the Air's LED backlit screen means its lid is thinner with an image that was somewhat brighter, at least with both systems set to max brightness.

The real key to finding out whether the MacBook Air is right for you lies in its stripped-down set of ports and connections. Those who regularly use more than one USB device, or need FireWire, an SD card slot, or an Express card slot will find the single USB jack too limiting. Likewise, we often say the telephone modem jacks and S-Video outputs on most laptops are a waste of space, but the MacBook Air goes even further, removing the Ethernet jack (a USB-to-Ethernet adapter will run you S$48 (US$31.58)) and offloading video output to a pair of included dongles (one VGA, one DVI).

If you live on Wi-Fi hotspots, use Bluetooth for your external mouse, and only need a USB port to occasionally sync and charge your iPod or iPhone, these limitations may not be a deal-breaker for you. While most hardware vendors offer a choice of mobile broadband options, Apple continues to offer none, which is disappointing for a system so clearly meant for life away from home and office. Without an Express card slot, your only option would be a USB mobile broadband modem, but with the sole USB jack under a tiny flap on the right side of the system with limited clearance, you may need a small USB extension cable to get a bulky USB mobile broadband modem connected (similar to the problems people had with the iPhone's recessed headphone jack).

While the 80GB hard drive included in the base model may be smaller than you're used to, the only other option is a 64GB solid state hard drive. With no moving parts, and advantages in heat, power consumption, and reliability, SSD hard drives are certainly the way of the future. The future may have to wait a few years for prices to come down, however; swapping the 80GB platter drive for the 64GB SSD drive is a whopping S$2,100 (US$1,381.58) upgrade. The only other internal hardware option is a CPU uptick, from 1.6GHz to 1.8GHz for S$452.20 (US$297.50). With the upgraded CPU and SSD drive, the S$2,988 (US$1,965.79) MacBook Air suddenly becomes a S$5,088 (US$3,347.37) laptop.

We are pleased to see that the MacBook Air comes standard with 2GB of RAM, but with a processor that runs at a much slower clockspeed than the standard MacBook (2.0GHz or 2.2GHz), plus a 4,200rpm 1.8-inch hard drive (as opposed to the standard 5,400rpm), it's not surprising that the MacBook Air is not as fast a performer as the black MacBook. Do note that the baseline white MacBook features a slower processor and half the memory of our MacBook review unit.

Performance And Battery Life of the Apple MacBook Air

And as we often point out, any modern dual-core CPU is going to be more than adequate for Web surfing, multimedia playback, and productivity tasks, and we were able to surf the Web, play videos, and work on a document at the same time with absolutely no slowdown or stuttering.

One of the biggest drawbacks of the MacBook Air is the lack of a replaceable battery. While most laptops will be obsolete before their batteries wear out, we are sensitive to the desire to occasionally carry an extra battery for extended field use. We're still conducting our standard DVD battery drain test on the system, and will report those scores shortly, but in anecdotal testing, the Air lasted for nearly 4 hours of mixed use, including video playback, software installation, Web surfing, and productivity tasks. That's reasonably close to Apple's 5-hour claims, but may not be enough for a full day of off-site use.

After-Sales Service And Support for the Apple MacBook Air

Apple notebooks have a one-year local warranty. At Apple's support Web site, Mac owners can download the latest drivers and manuals. In the event of simple malfunctions, the company offers an online knowledge database and support forum for troubleshooting. Should the Mac require further diagnosis or repair, Apple will send a technician onsite to repair your computer. For the first 90 days, there will be complimentary telephone support to resolve any Mac related inquiries. If such a service is invaluable, the warranty can be upgraded to AppleCare Protection Plan for an additional S$446 (US$293.42) which extends the coverage to three years with an international telephone support and hardware troubleshooting.
